Victory in Jesus

Victory in Jesus
words by Eugene Bartlett

I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't
To me the victory.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.

Chorus:
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ~1 Corinthians 15:57

A Bird

A Bird Came Down the Walk
Emily Dickinson

A Bird came down the Walk —
He did not know I saw —
He bit an Angle Worm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw,

And then, he drank a Dew
From a convenient Grass —
And then hopped sidewise to the Wall
To let a Beetle pass —

He glanced with rapid eyes
That hurried all abroad —
They looked like frightened Beads, I thought,
He stirred his Velvet Head. —

Like one in danger, Cautious,
I offered him a Crumb,
And he unrolled his feathers
And rowed him softer Home —

Than Oars divide the Ocean,
Too silver for a seam,
Or Butterflies, off Banks of Noon,
Leap, plashless as they swim.

Remember when I talked about visiting this sweet baby girl? Well, now she is a sweet 10-month-old. On Tuesday, I had the privilege of having a photo shoot with her. She was a good model and pleasant, too.

I'd Rather Have Jesus

I'd Rather Have Jesus
words by Rhea Miller

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands,
I’d rather be led by His nail pierced hand.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than world-wide fame,
I’d rather be true to His holy name.

He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
He’s sweeter than honey from out of the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs,
I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead.

Refrain:
Than to be a king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway,
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

A Friendly {?} Visitor

As Mom was watering the flowers the other day, she happened to see something in the four o'clocks.

Want to know what it was?

After we had a look through the field guide, we identified this fellow as a common garter snake. He was pretty small (maybe about a foot and a half) and he was sitting still. I started by taking his picture from the deck but then I was brave enough to walk around into the yard and take his picture from the other angle while Bekah stayed on the deck to make sure he didn't move one fraction. I don't like fractions, never did! :)

The reason I was even brave enough to step out into the yard was because Mr. Snake had just had himself a nice big lunch of something and the bulge in his middle was making him a mite slow.

When we went out the next day, he was gone. Wonder where he is now?

Grace Greater Than Our Sin

Where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:20

Grace Greater Than Our Sin
words by Julia Johnston

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide.
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?

Refrain:
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin.

Meeting Alex

Remember last August when I posted on my blog about my friends Britni and Zack getting married? Well, a little less than one year later, they welcomed a little one into their family. They are now parents to a sweet little baby boy, Zachary Alex, who they are calling Alex.

Today, we met Alex for the first time. He is such a cute baby.

Congratulations Britni and Zack on your new blessing!

Bermuda Shorts

When I saw this diy for bermuda shorts I decided to give it a try. I found a pair of older jeans that was worn around the hemline. I decided where I wanted them to hit then I added a couple of inches. Then I cut the jeans off at the line, and I folded them to the desired length. I ended up putting a few stitches on both sides of the rolled hem so that they would stay in place.

I didn't even think about taking a before picture but I did take an after picture.

I wear them all the time. I don't know what I did without them.

It Is Well With My Soul

The story behind "It Is Well with My Soul" was found on Nethymnal...

This hymn was written after two major traumas in Horatio Spafford’s life. The first was the great Chicago Fire of October 1871, which ruined him financially (he had been a wealthy businessman). Shortly after, while crossing the Atlantic, all four of Spafford’s daughters died in a collision with another ship. Spafford’s wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, “Saved alone.” Several weeks later, as Spafford’s own ship passed near the spot where his daughters died, the Holy Spirit inspired these words. They speak to the eternal hope that all believers have, no matter what pain and grief befall them on earth.

It Is Well with My Soul

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.

But, Lord, ‘tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh trump of the angel! Oh voice of the Lord!
Blessèd hope, blessèd rest of my soul!

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Our {Unusual} Fourth of July Festivities

Because of the stinking 97 degree heat yesterday, my family's usual fourth plans of going to the big family reunion was nixed by us girls. Dad decided to still go but Mom, Bekah, and I decided to come up with a different plan. After thinking about several different possibilities, we decided to head over to (the air conditioned) Barnes and Noble. We browsed, Bekah shopped with a birthday gift card, and we sipped coconut mocha and chocolate chip frappuccinos while looking at magazines. I grabbed several craft magazines, Mom found some house magazines to peruse, and Bekah oohed and ahhed over wedding magazines.

After our afternoon of festivities, we all got back home for a yummy  red, white, and blue chicken salad dinner...with red, white and blue plates and serving dishes of course!

We haven't been to a fireworks display in years. Bekah can't even remember going to see the fireworks. This year, we decided to go. We found a nice grassy place to park our chairs and wait for the display to start. After a day in the upper 90s, it was not too bad, surprisingly. A slight breeze was even blowing. Bekah and I both had a camera. As the first bang sounded and the sky was bright with fireworks we started clicking away. Between the two of us we took over two hundred pictures!

And that's how we celebrated Independence Day this year.

Happy Fourth of July

As you go about your picnic, barbecue, or other celebratory event, ponder the words to this song by Rich Mullins: Here in America.

***To turn off my mixpod to listen to this song, scroll down to the bottom of the page.
There you will see my player and click the play/pause button.

Here in America

Saints and children we have gathered here to hear the sacred story
And I'm glad to bring it to you with my best rhyming and rhythm
'Cause I know the thirsty listen and down to the waters come
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America

And if you listen to my songs I hope you hear the water falling
I hope you feel the oceans crashing on the coast of north New England
I wish I could be there just to see them, two summers past I was
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America

And if I were a painter I do not know which I'd paint
The calling of the ancient stars or assembling of the saints
And there's so much beauty around us for just two eyes to see
But everywhere I go I'm looking

And once I went to Appalachia for my father he was born there
And I saw the mountains waking with the innocence of children
And my soul is still there with them wrapped in the songs they brought
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America

And I've seen by the highways on a million exit ramps
Those two-legged memorials to the laws of happenstance
Waiting for four-wheeled messiahs to take them home again
But I am home anywhere if You are where I am

And if you listen to my songs I hope you hear the water falling
I hope you feel the oceans crashing on the coast of north New England
I wish I could be there just to see them, two summers past I was
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America

Happy Fourth, everyone!

Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy

Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ~ Matthew 11:28-30

Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy
words by Joseph Hart

Come, ye sinners, poor and needy,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity, love and power.

Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome,
God’s free bounty glorify;
True belief and true repentance,
Every grace that brings you nigh.

Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Lost and ruined by the fall;
If you tarry till you’re better,
You will never come at all.

View Him prostrate in the garden;
On the ground your Maker lies.
On the bloody tree behold Him;
Sinner, will this not suffice?

Lo! th’incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of His blood:
Venture on Him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude.

Let not conscience make you linger,
Not of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him.

Refrain:
I will arise and go to Jesus,
He will embrace me in His arms;
In the arms of my dear Savior,
O there are ten thousand charms.
